Hi All,

I am using the same materials in both my online and my traditional class.
I am using the CD Rom ActivStats by Paul Velleman along with the text The
Active Practice of Statistics by Moore. I love the materials. The CD will
run on either a Windows machine or a Macintosh. The CD contains the
student edition of DataDesk software, a very powerful statistical package.
DataDesk is a cross-platform program running on either the PC or Mac with
files being mostly portable from one platform to another. The CD and text
bundled together were under $80 in our bookstore.

One of my goals is for students to do statistics and write reports so that
statistics seems to be a useful subject to my students. This is the second
semester I have used the ActivStats CD and the first with the text. (I
used it in conjunction with Triola over the summer, but the marriage was
not as workable.) My students seem to like the CD and computer assignments
too (even though I work their fingers to the bone). Their grade consists
of short answer tests and computer assignments is the form of reports. The
reports are time-consuming to grade, but I feel that my students are
learning a valuable skill for almost any line of work.

You will not need the TI 93, but teaching in a computer lab is a plus. I
have experimented with different techniques of teaching with the CD and in
the lab. Now I lecture first, possibly go over some of the foundational
activities and work on problems in class. Some of these I have students
finish at home and collect for a grade. Seems to be going well. I do
have students who are NOT computer literate, and they are sometimes
overwhelmed. On the other hand, I promise them that the next semester they
will be much more computer literate without having to pay for a class. (We
give students the option of challenging the computer literacy requirement
through a testing process.)
