While I see the use of note cards on tests in relieving anxiety etc. I'm
afraid I'd have to agree with Lillie and Karen that students are crippled
when they don't have certain information at their fingertips. This is true
whether it be the multiplication tables (how many students have you had at
the developmental level who were crippled because of this? I've seen a
number!) or basic derivative/antiderivative formulas in calculus. It also
seems to me that memorizing a certain quantity of information is a brain
exercise just like running, lifting weights, etc. are body exercises. I'm
seeing lots of students who haven't been forced to do this and have not
developed that ability very well. I believe this hurts them educationally.
There's often more at stake than what it takes to succeed in "this" course.
We sometimes forget to take this into account in trying to be "helpful".
