The 83 has a string editor as part of its package, and so, off the cuff, I'd say that it is not unreasonable to expect the 83 to type exact roots to quadratic equations. The 82 does not seem (glancing through the manual) to have this capability. Ultimately, neither of these machines were meant to split polynomials over specific fields. The newer versions of TI products, with the computer algebra system running in the background, can do some of this. I would recommend, for those who want to factor polynomials over fields, the use of the software program Maple. Remember the credo in various versions of various standards: "appropriate use of technology." If I get the symbolic program for quadratic equations on the 83 up and running, I can certainly forward it to the listserve.
