This is just anecdotal, but I would bet that many math folks might
agree:
When we have run Differential Equations on a one-night basis both
students and teachers have torn their hair. Some part-timers have
refused to teach it on a one-meeting basis.
OTOH, I frequently have enjoyed a one-nighter (per week) for Linear
Algebra, and I think that students have tolerated it, too.
Elementary Stat and our Math for Poets course also run successfully with
the audience Karen describes. Our Int Alg and College Alg are 4 hours
and it's more of a stretcs but sometimes done. Cal classes are 4 and 5
hours - out of the question.
