I teach at Parkland College and we currently offer 3 mbined classes:
math/pre-algebra, pre-algebra/alg1, and alg1/alg2. We use
Bittenger/Ellenbogen PreAlgebra for the first course, Jordan & Palow's
Arithmetic & Algebra for the second, and for the third course we are
using an algebra2 book by Hubbard and Robinson and are supplementing
it for the algebra1 part. THis is the first semester for the third course and
the others have been up and running for 3 or 4 semesters.

Enrollment is based on the students assessing into the lower course
with a high test score or A in the prerequisite course. The classes meet
for 2 hour time blocks with lots of group work and active participation by
the students. The third course uses the TI83 or 82 and each student is
required to have one. Students get credit for the second level of each of
the courses. These are called FAST TRACK courses.
