My experience with take home exams has been that they are very useful in
situations where you wish to give a more reflective or a more anxious
student more time to succeed. The performance by students closely
reflected their usual patterns in testing and performance on homework.
However, our student body is known for not cheating, perhaps because most
are commuters and don't interact with each other or because many are
older non traditional students. I do have them sign an honor pledge that
it is their own work.

Usually on a test of this type -- requiring problem solving and original
thinking -- I do pick up on the ones that have decided to borrow each
other's ideas. They aren't very creative about hiding it.
