Re: Take Home Exams

After reading the responses to take home exams which encourage group
work, I am reminded of the comments of several of my colleagues in
regards to this process. Although they believe that the students may
indeed learn more mathematics participating in such a process, they are
concerned that such students are not practicing the skills that are
necessary to survive graduate school in mathematics i.e. very
competitive, working on your own on homework problems, tests being
completed on your own, and professors being fairly distant, particularly
in the first weed-out year.

Should there be a different standard for terminal courses than for
courses for majors simply because the grad schools have not yet changed
their expectations?
