YOUR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUESTED
An amendment from Senator Gorton (R-WA) to the funding bill for the
U.S. Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education
passed September 11th on a voice vote. Most crucial to us is that it
combines eleven existing federal K-12 education programs into block
grants. One of the eleven is Title II Eisenhower funds.
In a block grant, funds are sent to the local education agency
without any requirement as to how they are spent. In other words,
there would not be specific provisions requiring support for
mathematics education.
This bill will become a reality if passed by the U.S. House of
Representatives. The vote in the House is slated for Wednesday,
September 17th. It is IMPERATIVE that you contact your
Representative before the 17th to let him or her know your feelings
about this vote.
Title II funds ensure that mathematics teachers nationwide have
continued opportunities for professional growth. Excellent teachers
are critical to providing a high quality mathematics education for
every student, in every school, in every state.
When calling your Representative be sure to connect your professional
development experiences to your students' mathematical experiences.
Anecdotes and specific examples of student performance and class
activities are the perfect way to do this.
