About using calculators in the classroom: I think it is incumbent on every
teacher who uses them to make it very clear when they are appropriate and to
use them to check not replace thinking. And I'm afraid those of us using
them have to make up for mistakes made whether by previous teachers or by our
students or both. This is the first semester I have students in precalc who
have used GCs previously. And yes I am seeing some of that. Although the
above idea has always seemed important, I began feeling even more completely
with the advent of the TI-92. Yes, calc students should still be able to use
definition of derivative and evaluate limits and . . . even tho' 92 can do
all those things.
