Our community college is considering placement tests for math students.
[Now we are using ACT scores for math placement.] Does anyone have any
experience or recommendations? The Student Services Department here is
considering a computer-based placement test developed by the ACT
(Accuplacer, I think) and one developed by the CPB (AccuPlacer, I think).
Suggestions or recommendations please.

Accuplacer is developed by the College Board and ETS, not ACT. I have found
Accuplacer (and the paper and pencil version Companion) to be very good in
placing incoming students. You can get a sample examination copy from
Michelle Rosenthal at ETS. It is recommended that you use the examination
copy to pilot the test which is needed to obtain accurate cut scores. I
recommend the Windows version with the new item types. Michelle's email
address is mrosenthal@ets.org. The test also qualifies for Ability To
Benefit funding. I would be happy to assit you in setting up Accuplacer and
training test center staff to administer it as well as in setting appropriate
cutscores.
As an alternative to (or in addition to) Accuplacer, we can also develop a
placement test that meets your specific requirements and needs for upper
level math courses.
