As a graduate student, we had a Technical writing course in a room with =
computers. They designed the tables so the computer monitor and keyboard =
were below the transparent desktop. The desktop had a tint to it so there =
wasn't any glare. The CPU was one that could stand on its side, and it =
was on the floor. When writing longhand, we didn't have a monitor or =
keyboard in the way. Also, the monitors weren't blocking our vision of =
the board or instructor. Some students took notes by typing on the =
computer and saving to a floppy. I don't know what other classes were in =
that room, but the computers were connected to the university network =
(anything we were allowed to access with our sign on names we could access =
from there) and the internet. I think they had all the basic software =
that usually comes with PC's, too. The tables were in rows, but it was a =
small room. Might have seated 30. =20

Hi everyone,

For the first time in the history of our school, we will have one computer =
classroom that we can actually teach a class in (as opposed to just send =
our students to an open lab). Do any of you have a design layout that you =
are particularly fond of? If so what is it. We want to get away from the =
traditional rows. The lab will be shared by a number of disciplines and =
our committee has come up with the following questions to help us design =
the lab. At this time we are mostly talking about layout and not computer =
equipment. However, if you have suggestions about equipment, please make =
them.

1. Which departments currently use the lab? =20
2. Have you struggled with competing software needs of different department=
s? What software is loaded on the computers?
3. Was the lab designed to accomodate a particular pedagogy? =20
4. What are the pros/cons of the current lab design? What works? What =
doesn't?
5. If you could do it differently, what changes would you make?

Thanks for any help you can give.
