Hi,
In setting up our labs, we were restricted by the height of the class room
(existing space not new construction), and one of the problems I experience
as a Statistics teacher in that lab is that the screen for viewing the
computer output pulls down over the white board, leaving a few feet on
either side for notes I might want to add. I have requested that another
white board be installed on one side of the classroom.

As mentioned previously the ability to control lighting is important. We
have banks of lights that can be turned off or on. For the computer
display, the lights need to be off at the front of the room but on in back
for the students to see to take notes. Our teaching station is at the back
of the room also, so there is adequate lighting there. (Very inconvenient
for my teaching to have the computer is the back of the room, but it is
apparently good for some.)

We have teaching bunkers with lots of multimedia equipment in some labs.
Some bunkers are far too LARGE and you feel isolated from the students.
Try to avoid this. The person(s) who is/are teaching with the equipment
should have input into the design of the bunker.

computers. They designed the tables so the computer monitor and keyboard
were below the transparent desktop. The desktop had a tint to it so there
wasn't any glare. The CPU was one that could stand on its side, and it was
on the floor. When writing longhand, we didn't have a monitor or keyboard
in the way. Also, the monitors weren't blocking our vision of the board or
instructor. Some students took notes by typing on the computer and saving
to a floppy. I don't know what other classes were in that room, but the
computers were connected to the university network (anything we were
allowed to access with our sign on names we could access from there) and
the internet. I think they had all the basic software that usually comes
with PC's, too. The tables were in rows, but it was a small room. Might
have seated 30.

classroom that we can actually teach a class in (as opposed to just send
our students to an open lab). Do any of you have a design layout that you
are particularly fond of? If so what is it. We want to get away from the
traditional rows. The lab will be shared by a number of disciplines and
our committee has come up with the following questions to help us design
the lab. At this time we are mostly talking about layout and not computer
equipment. However, if you have suggestions about equipment, please make
them.
