I have followed with a smile the discussions about homework...very nice
philosophies.
I would like to support an almost forgotten suggestion earlier (sorry, the
name of submitter escapes me): Assign particular homework to students to
have on the board when class starts.

Here is how I do that. I have two lists anyway, a class roster list and a
list of homework from the text for the quarter. I merge the two lists in
the following fashion: next to each student name are two homework
assignments that he/she must put on the board during the quarter. any
given day, there may be four or five students(ie., not EVERY homework
problem is presented -- usually only even-numbered problems -- go figure!)
The boardwork is done the day her/his homework is due.
The ground rules are yes for those two days students must come to class
EARLY (3 minutes)
and the work is graded (10 points). It becomes part of a homework/quiz
average (a total of twelve 10 pointers with the two lowest dropped.)

It has worked out well for me.
