Here at NTID we have been using math labs with our introductory and
intermediate level math courses for some years now. The labs offer an
opportunity to explore topics through use of graphing calculators and through
other hands-on materials. We have been very pleased, in general, by the amount
of learning that occurs in conjunction with math lab experiences.

The general formula is three one-hour lecture/discussion classes per week and
one two-hour lab class. During lab students often work in small groups,
following instructor-developed handouts. They are then required to write up
their discoveries and conclusions in individual formal lab reports, to be
handed in the next week.

One of the rationales for the lab is the cooperative learning experience.
Working cooperatively is a valuable workplace skill these days. Discovery
learning is also felt by us to be important, and was used by us as a rationale
to argue for establishing this arrangement. Finally, the preparation of lab
reports on a regular basis adds an important component of writing to the
curriculum.

Good luck with your proposal.
