The Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Data Base CD ROM set consists of five discs. The same database with minor modifications is available for downloading through the present webpage. The structure and contents of the download area mirror the CD ROM data base and are outlined below. A forward slash (/) indicates a directory. Indentation indicates subdirectories or directory contents (coverages or files). Each section--separated by horizontal lines--shows only one nested level of the structure.
Most of the geospatial datasets downloadable directly from this page are in ArcInfo 7.x interchange (.e00) format. To reduce download time, we compressed these files to .zip format. These are being superceded by .sit fromat, as explained in the News from 7/15/00 below, which also explains how you can download many of the datasets in shapefile format.

NEW 8/30/01 All SAA raster data sets can now be downloaded from this site!
Originally, files larger than 70 MB were not included here. But Internet speeds have greatly increased, so more users find it practical to download large datasets. The cost of online storage also has decreased, and today we have more disk space at our disposal.
Most importantly, all current versions of ArcInfo can read the same file formats now, regardless of hardware platform. Thus, we no longer need to export grids to Interchange file format, which is extremely inefficient for raster data. Instead, we can isolate each dataset in its own workspace and compress it directly.
Now that the free StuffIt Expander is available for Solaris and Linux, too, we no longer have to use the less efficient ZIP format for universal distribution. As a result, our latest downloadable raster datasets take up less than half the space they would have occupied previously. Consequently, they take less than half as long to download. Eventually, we will replace all zipped Interchange files with stuffed workspaces so that you may save even more time by not having to import Interchange files.
NEW 12/13/00 In response to user requests, the INFO databases from discs 2 and 5 of the SAA are now available for downloading.
NEW 7/15/00 Our vector datasets are now also available in ESRI shapefile format. These files can be used directly with GIS software from many vendors, including ArcView GIS and the free ArcExplorer lightweight data viewer. To reduce download time further, we compressed these files to StuffIt (.sit) format. Soon, we also will make the raster datasets available in a more commonly usable image file format. Some experimental files may already be on this server, compressed as .sit files.
We just completed conversion of all the .eps graphics files from the original CD-ROM disc to portable document format (.pdf). Previously these display maps and graphs had been available online as part of the digital version of The Southern Appalachian Assessment reports in black and white only. Now, you can view and print them individually in full color without hassles.
Only some of these new files are linked in the follwing index structure, because we are using our limited resources to develop a completely new, much more user-friendly data-access interface. Meanwhile, you can access the new files directly from the data directories. First, determine the location of the file(s) you want in the following index structure, then look for corresponding .sit or .pdf files by clicking through the online SAA data directory tree. Remeber to come back to this page or bookmark it for quick and easy access.
Aladdin Expander is a free, easy-to-use, drag-and-drop decompression utility for .zip and .sit files (among many other formats). It now is available for Windows, Macintosh (Classic Mac OS as well as Mac OS X native), Linux, and Solaris.
Many other free decompression utilities for a variety of platforms are available at Freeware Home.
ArcExplorer, ESRI's free lightweight data viewer can read shapefiles and many image file formats. So, you do not need to go through a file import step or use a file conversion tool first, as used to be necessary to view the ArcInfo interchange (.e00) files.
Acrobat Reader is Adobe's free viewer for portable document format (.pdf) files.
