DOCUMENTATION FOR SAA ROADLESS COVERAGE: ROADLESS DEVLEOPED BY: SAA Roadless Team DATE: 1995 SOURCE: USFS mylars and data provided by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park SCALE: 1:24,000 with the the exception of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is at an unknown scale NOTES: Each National Forest determined proposed roadless areas based on criteria from the Regional Forester and transferred these areas onto mylar at a scale of 1:24,000. The forests also transferred the boundaries of any state lands that are considered roadless. These mylars were scanned and coded by TVA. Coding was verified by Roadless Team members. The boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was obtained from Park personnel but the base scale was not known. Major roads and developed areas within the park were buffered and excluded from roadless status. Because of the uncertainty of the base scale, for reports we decided to use the acreage figure from the Park's management plan, 464,544 acres, rather than GIS acres. The item NAME contains the name of the roadless area. RLESS_ID contains the roadless number assigned to the area; in the case of the Smokies, which has no number, 'Smoky' was moved to this item. OWNER indiciates the administering agency (USFS, NPS, state), and OWNNAME indicates the forest, state, or park responsible for the area. ACRES is a calculation of the GIS area (in square meters) to acres.
