DOCUMENTATION FOR SAA WILDERNESS COVERAGE: WILDERNS DEVELOPED BY: SAA Roadless Team DATE: 1995 SOURCE: USFS district GIS databases and SAA 1:2,000,000 scale wilderness coverage SCALE: 1:24,000 and 1:2,000,000 NOTES: Arcs for this coverage were primarily extracted from USFS district admin and stand coverages at 1:24,000. However, in the case of the Brasstown district on the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia, wilderness arcs were not available from either of these sources. For this district we had no choice but to use the arcs from the 1:2,000,000 scale SAA wilderness coverage. An item, SCALE, was added to the AAT and coded as either 24000 or 2000000 to track base scale of the arcs used. Also, the boundary of the Shenandoah National Park was not available at 1:24000 and the 1:2,000,000 arcs were used. Labels and the items FEDCODE and FEDNAME were taken from the 1:2,000,000 scale coverage and verified by Roadless Team members. The items NUMBER, USE_LEVEL, LEGAL_ACRES, MARKSYM, and OWNNAME were added to the PAT. MARKSYM holds symbol values to depict label points according to use level. Wilderness are broken by state boundaries so that acreages per state and national forest could be calculated.
