Advocates for the Oak Ridge Reservation (AFORR)—a group of individuals and organizations in Tennessee that support the preservation of natural resources on the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Reservation.

Alabama Environmental Council—a statewide, non-profit, citizen-led organization (located in Birmingham) committed to the protection and enhancement of our state's natural resources and environment.

Appalachian Bear Center—a one-of-a-kind black bear rehabilitation, research and eduation facility located just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Appalachian Community Fund (ACF)—a community foundation established to provide grants to groups promoting progressive community change in the central region of Appalachia.

Appalachian Forest Regional Center—one of four regional centers under the National Community Forestry Center, which is collaborating with the National Network of Forest Practitioners to help develop research initiatives and local information resources that facilitate community-based problem solving in natural resource-based communities.

Appalachian Institute for Sustainability—organized by the residents of Western North Carolina to create a model community education and outreach program that advances a broad regional understanding of sustainability. Initial efforts of the Institute have focused on the creation of the Sustainable Living Website.

Appalachian Society of American Foresters—one of 33 state and multi-state societies that make up the Society of American Foresters, the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. The Appalachian SAF is composed of foresters from the three state region of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Appalachian Studies Association—a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization for scholars, teachers, regional activists and others whose work centers on the Appalachian region. The Appalachian Studies Association's mission is to encourage study, advance scholarship, disseminate information, and enhance communication between Appalachian peoples, their communities, governmental organizations, and educational institutions.

Appalachian Trail Conference—a volunteer-centered nonprofit organization (located in Harper's Ferry, WVA) that maintains the 2,167-mile Appalachian Train footpath and helps manage the lands that protect it.

Appalachian Voices—a nonprofit, grassroots organization (located in Boone, NC) committed to protecting and restoring the fragile and threatened native ecosystems of the Appalachian Mountains from Alabama to Maine.

Association of Southeastern Biologists—The purpose of this association shall be to promote the advancement of biology as a science by encouraging research, the imparting of knowledge, the application of knowledge to the solution of biological problems, and the preservation of biological resources.

Black Mountains' Initiative—a photographic documentary project to capture the essence of what makes the Black Mountains region (home of Mount Mitchell) unique.

Center for Appalachian Studies and Services—located at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, CASS is a hub of scholarly, educational, public service, and artistic projects addressing the needs and interests of the Appalachian region.

Chattowah Open Land Trust—a land trust (located in Alpharetta, GA) directly involved in protecting important land resources for the public benefit in the Ridge and Valley and Cumberland Plateau (Northwest Georgia Area), the Blue Ridge (Northeast Georgia area) and Piedmont (Columbus over to August up to Northernmost Metro Atlanta) .

Cherokee Forest Voices—an organization of volunteers interested in the conservation of the vast resources of the Cherokee National Forest as a wonderful, wild and natural place.

Community Foundation of Western North Carolina—the Foundation makes grants to support activities benefiting the arts, education, environment, human services and civic improvements.

Community Partnership Center—established in 1994 to link University of Tennessee faculty, students, and staff with urban and rural community groups and agencies to address the core problems facing low- and moderate-income communities.

Ecological Society of America-Southeastern Chapter—a subdivision of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) formed to encourage education and research and to sponsor meetings for the communication of ecological education and research activities of special interest to ecologists in the Southeastern United States.

Foothills Land Conservancy—an independent, non-profit land trust that strives to preserve the unique ecological, agricultural, and scenic resources of East Tennessee.

Foundation for Global Sustainability—a non-profit educational organization that works to protect the natural life-support systems of Southern Appalachia and the Upper Tennessee River Valley for present and future generations.

Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park—assists the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by raising funds and public awareness, and providing volunteers for needed projects.

Georgia Conservancy (The)—a volunteer organization (located in Atlanta) that works in a variety of arenas to protect Georgia's water, air, and natural areas.

Hellbender Press (The)—a tabloid-sized periodical dedicated to monitoring and addressing social and environmental issues in the Upper Tennessee River Valley and Southern Appalachian Mountains through fair and factual reporting. It is published quarterly by the Foundation for Global Sustainability and distributed free of charge.

Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at Ichauway (GA)—the mission of the Center is to improve quality of life in the region by providing a program of excellence in ecology and natural resource management through integrated research, education and conservation activities.

Land-of-Sky Regional Council—a multi-county, local government planning and development organization in North Carolina.

Land Trust Alliance (The)—the national leader of the private land conservation movement, promoting voluntary land conservation across the country and providing resources, leadership, and training to the nation's 1,200-plus nonprofit, grassroots land trusts, helping them to protect important open spaces. National Wildlife Federation—the nation's largest member-supported conservation group, uniting individuals, organizations, businesses and government to protect wildlife, wild places, and the environment. You can also located the affiliated state organizations.

Savannah River Ecology Laboratory—operated by the University of Georgia (UGA) and funded primarily by a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy, laboratory scientists conduct ecological research at the Savannah River Site (SRS), a 310-square-mile nuclear weapons materials processing complex on the Georgia/South Carolina border near Aiken, S.C.

Save Our Cumberland Mountains (SOCM)—a rural Tennessee citizen's organization working for social, environmental, and economic justice.

Smoky Mountain Field School—founded in 1978 by the University of Tennessee in cooperation with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the school provides expert field-based programs designed to explore the beauty and abundance of life in the forest.

South Carolina Heritage Trust—A part of the Natural Heritage Network, the South Carolina Heritage Trust's purpose is to inventory, evaluate, and protect the elements considered the most outstanding representatives of the state heritage.

Southern Appalachian Biodiversity Project—a regional citizens organization dedicated to the defense and restoration of the native biodiversity of Southern Appalachia.

Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition—the SAFC (located in Asheville, NC) is a collaboration of national, regional, state, and local conservation organizations from Alabama to Virginia, formed in 1994 in response to the threats facing the region's public forests.

Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy—a volunteer organization established to work with individuals and local communities to identify, preserve, and manage the world's oldest mountains for the benefit of present and future generations.

Southern Appalachian Mountains Initiative (SAMI)—a voluntary partnership (located in Asheville, NC) of state and federal environmental regulatory agencies, federal land managers, industry, academia, environmental groups, and interested public participants that seeks to identify and recommend reasonable measures to remedy existing and to prevent future adverse effects from human induced air pollution on the air-quality related values of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Southern Regional Extension Forestry—provides extensive information and links to natural resources websites throughout the southern United States. The Encyclopedia of Southern Appalachian Forest Ecosystems synthesizes literature from thousands of sources to provide resource managers, land owners, researchers, students, and the public easy access to research knowledge on the southern Appalachians. Presently the encyclopedia contains a wealth of information on the ecology and management of southern Appalachian oak forests. Other forest communities will be the focus of future additions.

Tennessee Clean Water Network—a coalition of more than 30 environmental organizations, was formed in 1998 to fight for better implementation of the Clean Water Act and to watch over the preparation of watershed cleanup plans in the state. The website compiles information specifically for the Tennessee clean water activist (water quality data and water policy development at the state level, comprehensive links to Tennessee environmental organizations, government agencies, fundraising resources, and more).

Western North Carolina Alliance—a grassroots environmental organization established to address the critical issues facing mountain communities of western North Carolina.
