What is a podcast?

A podcast is the name given for an audio file that can be automatically downloaded from the Internet onto your computer. Podcasts take many forms, but at WUOT, we offer local feature stories and interviews as podcasts.

How is that different from any other downloadable audio file?

You can “subscribe” to a podcast on a particular web site, and your computer will automatically download any new podcasts that are posted on that site. Think of it like a magazine. If you subscribe to a magazine, it’s delivered to your door automatically--- you don’t have to run out to the newsstand every time a new issue of that magazine comes out. With a podcasting subscription, the audio files are delivered directly to your computer.

Do I have to have an iPod to listen to a podcast?

No. Although some people listen to podcasts on Ipods or other digital music players, you don’t have to. A lot of people listen to podcasts on their computers.

Do I have to have special software on my computer?

Yes, but the good news is that it’s free. One of the more popular programs for playing podcasts is iTunes. You can find a free version of it at www.apple.com/itunes. Some of the others include iPodder, Podcatcher and Odeo.

Do I have to pay for a WUOT podcasting subscription?

No, it’s a free service. But please remember that it takes money to produce all of the programs we present, whether the programs appear on the radio or on our web page. Your donation to WUOT ensures that we can continue to provide these programs and services and that we can maintain a high level of quality.

How do I subscribe to WUOT's free podcast service?

If you are using iTunes:

1) Open up your iTunes program to the “Podcast” page
2) Click and drag this icon into the podcast window on your iTunes:

You are now subscribed to WUOT's free podcasts. Every time you open iTunes, it will automatically update your subscription, adding any new stories or interviews that we’ve produced.

If you are using another program to manage your podcast:

1) Highlight and copy the following URL:

wuot.org/mt/index.xml

2) Paste it into your preferred podcasting tool software (e.g. Odeo, iPodder, etc.)

Now, every time you open your podcasting software, it will automatically update your subscription, adding new stories or interviews that we’ve produced.
